You’ve heard about the controversy surrounding the NFL regarding the players who are taking a knee during the national anthem, right? It seems like everyone is talking about it, even those who are not interested in football. I’ve had a lot of conversation on the topic over the last few days myself and from what I’ve heard, people seem to have one of the following opinions:
- Those condemning the players who take a knee during the national anthem are violating their right to free speech.
- Those taking a knee are disrespecting those who are fighting for, have fought for, and those who have given their lives for our freedom. Or…
- Those who are fighting for, have fought for, and those who have given their lives for our freedom did so for this exact reason; our right to free speech.
Well, I have a lot of respect for these players using their status to peacefully protest what they feel are injustices against many people of color (something I don’t disagree with, a story for another day). And while I have A LOT of respect, admiration, and appreciation for those who serve our country, I do feel that this is what they are and have fought for, freedom.
You may disagree with me and my opinion. And that’s ok. Why? Because we have the freedom to have our own thoughts and opinions.
