A Bidding War for Ryan McDonagh?

New York Rangers defenseman, Ryan McDonagh, seems to be the hot topic in the hockey world right now. McDonagh, 28, has spent every season with the New York Rangers and is now on the trading block. Despite being one of the best defensive-defensemen in the league, the Rangers are looking for a change due to the fact they’ve been struggling all season long. Everyone except Lundqvist is on the trading block and many teams are interested in McDonagh. Front-runners in the McDonagh sweepstakes include Boston, Tampa, and Toronto… all three play in the NHL’s Atlantic Division. All three teams are looking to boost their depth heading into the playoffs and this could mean a bidding war for McDonagh is brewing.

What makes McDonagh so desirable? Well, he has long been one of the NHL’s best defensive-defensemen. McDonagh is a legit number one defenseman who has the skill to lead a team to the Cup finals. He has been in the running for the Norris Trophy, receiving votes in 5 out of his 8 seasons in the NHL. McDonagh has never had a negative +/- and has scored 30 or more points in 5 out of 8 seasons and is well on his way to scoring over 30 points during the 2017-18 season. He is one of the best defensemen in the league and carries a reasonable contract making $4.7mil a year.

Boston, Tampa, and Toronto could put on a bidding war to acquire McDonagh and the Rangers are going to get some pretty nice assets in return if that is the case. The team with the best chance to land McDonagh is the Boston Bruins. The Bruins seem to have an endless amount of assets and the Rangers will definitely be interested in many of them. Names that have been thrown around are Brandon Carlo, Jeremy Lauzon, Jakub Zboril, Danton Heinen, Jake Studnicka, Jake DeBrusk and many more. The most logical thing for the Bruins to do would be to give up Carlo, picks, and another prospect. But, if it turns into a bidding war, McDonagh’s price will skyrocket.

It is said that the Rangers want Bruins forward Jake DeBrusk in a deal for McDonagh. DeBrusk has a very high ceiling and is probably going to turn out to be one of the NHL’s best. I doubt Don Sweeney would be interested in trading JDB as he is a HUGE part of the future in Boston. To get the deal done, Boston should offer up some of their other top prospects as they have a surplus of them.

Both Tampa and Toronto are teams that also want to bolster their lineup. Toronto probably needs to be bolstered more than Tampa and will most likely make a strong push to acquire McDonagh and Toronto has some great assets as well.

A bidding war is what’s going to make the New York Rangers a better team faster. They would highly benefit from it because they’d acquire some NHL ready prospects as well as draft picks. Overall, I see a bidding war for McDonagh in the near future and because of it the Rangers will become a much better team.
