On Kevin Love & Mental Health.

Who is Kevin Love?

Kevin Love is an NBA player for the Cleveland Cavaliers.

Kevin Love is 29 years old.

Kevin Love suffers from anxiety.

In an essay published earlier this week in The Players’ Tribune, Love shares with his readers details around a panic attack he suffered on the court during a game in early November, something Love had never experienced before in life, never mind on the court. Shortly after his on-court panic attack, Love knew that he “…couldn’t bury what had happened and try to move forward.” But admitting to himself that he needed to talk to someone was actually the easy part, he still had to get over a 29 year old mindset that talking about feelings is a sign of weakness.

Call it a stigma or call it fear or insecurity — you can call it a number of things — but what I was worried about wasn’t just my own inner struggles but how difficult it was to talk about them.

Thankfully, Love approached the Cavs who helped him find a therapist who is working really well for him. Is he cured from his anxiety? No. But he’s making progress!

The Court Itself

Should players like Kevin Love talk about their mental health?

Hell yeah.

The fact of the matter is, “everyone is going through something that we can’t see.”

Folks, my friend has a book for her toddler called Everyone Poops. You know why there is a book called Everyone Poops? Because everyone poops. Men, women, women, men. We all poop. Yup. I went there. I went there because there are other truths we all seem to want to hide. You know, like the fact that everyone has feelings. Everyone has something going on. Everyone cries. It doesn’t matter if your male, female, an NBA player, or an Uber driver. We all have the right to seek help and not to feel like a lesser man or women as a result. Want to know another truth? I think more of Kevin Love knowing that he’s human.

Go ahead and read Love’s full essay and try to tell me you don’t think more of Kevin Love too.
