Alex Ovechkin scored his 600th career NHL goal on Monday against the Winnipeg Jets. Ovechkin is the 20th player in NHL history to do so and the 4th player to do it in under 1,000 games played. The Capitals forward also leads all active players in goals per game and is probably the most consistent goal scorer the league has had over the years.

Scoring 600 goals in under 1,000 games has put Ovechkin in elite company. The other players to accomplish the feat are Wayne Gretzky (718 games), Mario Lemieux (719 games), and Brett Hull (900 games). Ovechkin scored his 600th in 990 games, 10 games shy of 1,000.

According to NHL.com, Ovechkin leads in most goals scored since 2005-06 with 600. Pittsburgh Penguins star, Sidney Crosby, comes in at second place with 405 goals in 852 games. New Boston Bruin, Rick Nash, is tied for third place with Eric Staal. Nash has recorded 379 goals in 903 contests, and Staal has recorded 379 goals in 999 contests.

Since the 05-06 season, Ovechkin ranks 11th in assists with 509, first in points with 1109, first in power-play points with 431, first in shots on goal with 4839, and 4th in hits with 2611. Ovechkin is nothing short of amazing.

Will Ovechkin’s number eventually be retired by the league and by the Washington Capitals? It should be considering all he has done in the NHL. Scoring goals is tougher now than ever before and Ovechkin continues to put up almost a goal per game. He is truly one of the best players in the NHL and will be known as one of the best for the rest of his life.
