I’m the first to admit that I’m not an…active (for a lack of a better word) fan of tennis. I’ll watch a match here and there and follow the latest news if it is in front of me, but rarely do I seek it myself. Although, with that said though, I am a HUGE fan of Serena Williams. I’m a fan of her sister, too, but Serena…well, between her work ethic and her views and statements on the importance of positive body image as well as equality (racial and gender), Serena always has my attention. Plus, she holds…wait for it..TWENTY THREE grand slam titles. 23!!! One was won WHILE PREGNANT!!!
Sorry, I got a little too excited there for a minute.
Needless to say, I am very excited for Serena’s new HBO special, “Being Serena.” Starting tonight (May 2), the five-part documentary will give us a look into Serena’s life. Specifically, the series will showcase, “huge moments in her career, her marriage and her pregnancy with her daughter, Alexis Olympia Ohanian Jr.” Reviews thus far have been extremely positive with many noting how Serena allows us to see how vulnerable she was during pregnancy and immediately after the birth of her daughter, but how her mental strength and toughness kept her from, well, losing herself. From what I have read, the first few episodes are not necessarily about tennis, but instead, is about what it takes to overcome challenges and achieve your goals and dreams. I’ll be watching and hope you will too!
