Free Agency Low-Down

So, there are about a million things happening right now in the NBA with free agency, which started five days ago on July 1st.  Here’s a little terminology guide for you folks unfamiliar with the way free agency works:

“Unrestricted Free Agent”

The player is free to sign with any team (for the most part! There are some exceptions where existing contracts restrict their choices!)

“Restricted Free Agent”

The player can sign an offer with any team, but the player’s original team can retain him by matching the terms of that offer.

“Team Option”

This gives the original team the right to keep a player for another year.

“Player Option”

This grants the player the power to decide whether to stay for another year or become an unrestricted free agent (see above!)

“Early Termination Option”

This gives the player the right to end a signed contract.

“Two-way Free Agent”

“A Two-Way player (other than a first round draft pick whose third or fourth year option was not exercised) will be a Restricted Free Agent at the conclusion of a Two-Way Contract if he was on the NBA team’s active or inactive list for 15 or more days of the NBA regular season in the last season of such contract and provided that the team makes a Qualifying Offer to the player.” ***(I copied this definition from, I couldn’t put it into my own words!)

My group chat with my brothers is continually lighting up, and my boyfriend is constantly checking Bleacher Report. Check out this article by ESPN to get a low-down of almost EVERYTHING that has been happening, but for right now I’m going to narrow some of my favorite topics into a list of my favorites, which I’m calling “My ‘oooooo, Interesting’ List.”

My “oooooo, Interesting” List:

1)Los Angeles Lakers: “L.A. Bron” gets 4 year, $153 million. Others signing to LA include Kentavious Caldwell-Pope, Lance Stephenson, & JaVale McGee.

2) Paul George staying in OKC.

3)Golden State Warriors: 2 year, $61.5 million deal with Kevin Durant.

4)Brooklyn Nets: 2 year, $16 million deal with Joe Harris & one year $4.4 million deal with Ed Davis.

5)Houstin Rockets: 4 year $160 million deal with Chris Paul. ONE HUNDRED SIXTY. 160. One….sixty.

6)Boston Celtics: 2 year, $11 million deal with Aaron Baynes.

7)Oklahoma City Thunder: 4 year, $137 million deal with Paul George. Nerlens Noel with a 2 year deal including a player option in year 2.

8)Milwaukee Bucks: Giannis Antetokounmpo is the cover athlete for NBA 2K. Also, they signed a 3 year contract for $21 million with Ersan Ilyasova. But…what about Jabari Parker?

What have been your favorite moves in free agency so far?
