Last week we talked about the top three teams in the Eastern Conference. Today, let’s take a look at the top three teams in the Western Conference.
Currently first in the Western Conference, the Seattle Storm have the (statistically) best offense in the league. Their success is due to their star players: Breanna Stewart, Jewell Loyd, Natasha Howard, and Sue Bird. Stewart alone is a star and can do a lot for the team, but when paired with Loyd and supported by Howard and Bird? The Seattle Storm are hard to beat. Can they carry their success to the end of the season? If they stay healthy, absolutely.
I think it’s fair to say that the Phoenix Mercury are having a relatively successful season so far, even if they are sitting at number two in the Western Conference after previously being in the top spot. Don’t get me wrong, second is not a bad spot by any means, especially when you consider just how amazing Brittany Griner (who many believe will be this year’s MVP and who is the leagues leading blocker with two to three blocks per game) and Diana Taurasi (who leads the league in three-point shots and free throws) are playing. In fact, I won’t be surprised if the Mercury make it back to the top soon.
Los Angeles Sparks
Riquna Williams. Odyssey Sims. Alana Beard. Who are they? The three key players that are putting the sparkle into the Sparks this season. Sorry. I know, that was sooo cheesy. But really, it’s the truth. Williams and Sims are playing like, well, they’re fantastic and Beard is the queen of “turn-over traps.” The three of them are the reason why the team, like the Mercury, recently held the top spot in the Western Conference. They were knocked down a spot at the end of June when the Las Vegas Aces beat them 94-78. They also fell to the Connecticut Sun just last week. The Sparks fell behind in that game fast, but to their credit, came back in the second half and within the last few seconds of the game, only needed two points to win. They obviously didn’t get those two points, but the come back was amazing and is the reason why I believe the Sparks will be on top again before the end of the season. Will then end the season on top? The Western Conference is too good to say for sure, but they’re a strong contender.
