2019 Draft Needs Tracker: Detroit Lions

With the draft looming a few short weeks away, teams are busy figuring out who can make their teams better. Here’s my take on what your team needs to do in the draft to take the next step.

NFC North: Detroit Lions

1st Round: 8
2nd Round:43
3rd Round: 89

The Lions have a long way to go and will need to draft some immediate difference makers when they’re on the clock. If I’m Matt Patricia and crew, I’ve got to look first at the defensive side of the ball. With their first pick at number eight, the Lions might still be able to get one of the top pass rushers in the draft. While Nick Bosa and Rashan Gary will likely be off the board at that point, Detroit is still going to want to address their needs at the edge and there are certainly a few serious impact DE’s that will be available at eight, so it’s a matter of finding the right guy. Brian Burns, Jachai Polite and Montez Sweat are a few guys that might fill that void in Detroit. I’m keen to see how some of those guys fare at the combine next week. In addition to needing defensive ends, Detroit would do well to add a pass catching tight end to their roster. New OC Darrell Bevell is fond of spreading the ball around, so a tight end in the second round wouldn’t surprise me in the slightest. The Lions do have enough cap space to go after an established NFL player at either position, if maybe not a top-tier guy, so they might move picks to make some bigger changes, which could be wise, seeing as how the Bears are young and talented and the Vikings and Packers are always closer than you think. If Detroit wants to get off the mat in the NFC North, they’ll need to think aggressively.
