2019 Draft Needs Tracker: Houston Texans

With the draft looming a few short weeks away, teams are busy figuring out who can make their teams better. Here’s my take on what your team needs to do in the draft to take the next step.

AFC South: Houston Texans

1st Round: 23
2nd Round: 54, 55
3rd Round: 87

Having slapped the franchise tag on Ja’Daveon Clowney, the Texans will keep the core of the pass-rush happy defense together. J.J. Watt might be a step slower, but he’s still the captain of that unit, and it’s a great one. But they could use some help in the secondary, where a physical corner to jam receivers and disrupt routes would help create opportunity for the pass rushers. But I’m looking at the offensive side of the ball early in this draft for Houston. Specifically, along the offensive line. DeShaun Watson looked brilliant for parts of the year, but he was sacked sixty-two times, that’s more than any other quarterback in the league, and it wasn’t close. I expect that the most explosive defensive players will go fast in this draft, leaving some very solid, if unglamorous players available when Houston is on the clock. Offensive linemen seldom get the same sort of buzz, so look for Houston to spend a first rounder on protection for their young quarterback.
