5 Sports Moments I’m Thankful For This Year

While much of society constantly seems to be on the verge of bursting into dumpster flames, I’m always thankful each time the sports world offers up a nugget of goodness that alleviates the stress of reality for a moment.

In the spirit of Thanksgiving, I’m sharing a few of the standout sports-related highlights from 2019 that continue to put a smile on my face.

In no particular order, here are the top five sports moments that I’m thankful for this year.

Katelyn Ohashi’s Floor Routines

Sometimes when I’m in a bad mood, I watch Katelyn Ohashi routines. For real. It’s impossible to watch her infectious joy on the gymnastics mat and not feel better than you did before. It’s science.

This clip went bonkers viral back in January, and for good reason; Katelyn Ohashi is hecking impressive. Since then, Ohashi (a body positivity icon) went on to change her routine music to an all-female mashup. Because, girl power.

Absolutely Everything About the USWNT

Speaking of girl power, watching the U.S. Women’s National Soccer Team win their second consecutive World Cup was, for many of us, the sports highlight of the year. Megan Rapinoe, Alex Morgan, Rose Freaking Lavelle—there are too many amazing moments to choose a favorite.

As much as we love watching them play, it’s the team’s tenacity off the field that truly takes their awesomeness to the next level. Megan Rapinoe’s grace under fire while being publicly attacked by the president won’t soon be forgotten. And their ongoing fight against the U..S. Soccer Federation for equal pay is a testament to what a bunch of badass women they really are.

I’m super thankful for how this team is inspiring younger generations of girls, and honestly, the Summer Olympics can’t come soon enough.

Toronto’s Plant Guy

The best viral moments are the ones that go global because they’re so unexpectedly wholesome. One of the best of these moments in 2019 took place during the NBA Finals when a grateful Raptors fan was captured on camera, toting a large plant that he planned to give Kawhi Leonard as a housewarming gift.

Plant Guy got his wish at the Raptors’ victory parade, where he made his way to the front of the crowd and gave Leonard a smaller plant as a token of his appreciation.

Monday Night Football Cat

When a black cat ran onto the field during the Monday night Giants-Cowboys game earlier this month, the sports world united for a moment to cheer on the thoroughly confused kitty.

As of a few days after the on-field interruption, the cat had yet to be located. Apparently, MetLife Stadium is home to a number of stray kitties, and this one just happened to choose an inopportune time to wander into her 15 minutes of fame.

Michelle Obama Schooling Everyone at Dodgeball

Michelle Obama appeared on The Late Late Show with James Cordon back in June, where she took on Cordon in a game of dodgeball—the United States vs. the United Kingdom. And while Harry Styles getting hit in the junk with a dodgeball hurled by the former First Lady wasn’t something I knew was missing from my life, I’m certainly better off having seen it.
