Resuming the NBA season – Is there hope?

A group of NBA stars, including LeBron James, Stephen Curry, Giannis Antetokounmpo, Damian Lillard, Russell Westbrook, Kevin Durant, Kawhi Leonard, and Players’ Association President Chris Paul; held a conference call to garner interest on resuming the 2019-20 NBA season, per Yahoo! Sports’ Chris Hayes. This comes among reports that regional representatives from the NBPA have been contacting players to gauge interest in ending the season.

The general sense from both the NBA’s stars and general playing population seems to be in favor of resuming the NBA season. The concern seems to be about a loss of postseason profit negatively impacting the next CBA, especially for teams that do not make the playoffs this season or next. The consensus seems to be toward picking up at the beginning of the postseason in a traditional, 16 team playoffs with a delayed beginning to next season, with action taking place in a remote “bubble” location, such as Walt Disney World or Las Vegas.

This news has allowed the NBA players community to put pressure on top brass as a united front toward resuming the season, as commissioner Adam Silver has exercised caution in resuming play. It seems that this pressure has pressed the league office to move quickly, as members of the Board of Governors left a call with Silver on Tuesday feeling “positive about momentum toward an NBA return to play this season”, per Woj.
