The Orlando Pride are on top of the NWSL, thanks in no small part to the league’s Player of the Month for the month of May. If you’ve been up on Orlando’s start to the season, it comes as no surprise that the league named Pride striker Alex Morgan as it’s POTM.
Morgan ended the month with a goal in each of the Pride’s four games, also making her the league’s leading scorer. Morgan’s prowess not only vaulted her team to first in the table, but it inked her name in the record books as she became the first player in league history to record a goal in four consecutive games to open a campaign.
Two of Morgan’s goals went down as game winners over the course of their three game winning streak. The USWNT striker has also played every single minute of the Pride’s season thus far, a stat that isn’t hard to imagine given her impact.
But Morgan wasn’t the only Pride player the league took notice of; two of her teammates joined her in the lineup for the NWSL’s Team of the Month. Her partner in goal scoring crime, Sydney Leroux, makes her first ever appearance on a Team of the Month alongside Morgan in the striker slot, while 2020 NWSL Draft selection Phoebe McClernon earned the nod as a defender. McClernon played every minute of the Pride’s May fixtures, tallying her first pro assist on May 16 against the Washington Spirit.
It has been a dream start to the season for Orlando with both stars and youngsters shining brightly. The league has taken notice so the attention turns to the players: can they continue to wreak havoc on opponents?
