The USWNT are in Houston for their Summer Series and five Thorns have made the roster: Adrianna Franch, Crystal Dunn, Becky Sauerbrunn, Lindsey Horan, and Sophia Smith. 22% of the USWNT roster that’s in Houston for the Summer Series call Portland home during the regular season, a higher percentage than any other club.
To date, the Americans have played once during this series, a win over Portugal that saw Becky Sauerbrunn captain the side. As usual, Sauerbrunn was a commanding force at the back and was a major reason as to why they were able to hold the Portugal attack scoreless. It was Sauerbrunn’s 185th appearance for the stars and stripes, a total that puts her at 14th all-time.
Horan also cracked the starting lineup for her 94th cap and kept her streak alive of appearing in every game for the side in 2021. As she does for the Thorns, Horan owned the middle of the park, playing in a true number nine role. Her chemistry with Sam Mewis and Rose Lavelle truly makes them one of the most fearsome threesomes in international soccer.
Dunn was the only Thorn to be subbed off but she put in an incredibly impressive 79 minutes en route to the victory. Her seventh appearance of 2021 was good for her 112th international cap. Dunn was tasked with shutting down Kansas City star Jessica Silva and she made it look like nothing more than another day’s work, successfully nullifying the speedy winger.
Smith came in for Megan Rapinoe in the 73rd minute and truly showed her potential at being able to take over Rapinoe’s throne. Smith’s quickness and decision making skills are simply things that cannot be coached and assets that will see her be a fixture for the national team for years to come.
The squad will be back in action against Jamaica on June 13th.
