The United States Women’s National Soccer Team has announced their 2020 (2021) Tokyo Olympics roster. The team will be anchored by veteran mainstays with 17 players that were last seen on the global stage winning the 2019 Women’s World Cup. The team will consist of 14 players that ply their trade in the NWSL and only one player who is playing in Europe, defender Abby Dahlkemper with Manchester City. The most affected NWSL team will be the Portland Thorns who will have to make do without four of their starters, goalie Adrianna Franch, midfielder Lindsey Horan, and defenders Crystal Dunn and Becky Sauerbrunn.
The team includes seven first-time Olympians including midfielders Kristie and Sam Mewis, plus Rose Lavelle and defenders Dahlkemper, Tierna Davidson and Emily Sonnett and goalie Franch. The Mewis sisters are the first group of sisters to ever play for the USWNT at an Olympic tournament, Kristie Mewis is the only member of the 18-player roster who was not a part of the 2019 World Cup group.
The most experienced players on the roster are both forwards; Carli Lloyd from Gotham FC and free agent Tobin Heath, who have now matched Christie Pearce Rampone for most trips to the Olympiad with four. Lloyd will also become the oldest player to ever play for the stars and stripes at the Olympics at 39 years old.
In case of injuries, the team will bring four alternates to Tokyo; goalie Jane Campbell, defender Casey Kruger, midfielder Catarina Macario and forward Lynn Williams. Those four players are all first time Olympians.
