OL Reign have announced the resignation of head coach Farid Benstiti, effective immediately. Assistant Sam Laity, a Reign staffer since 2013, will assume head coaching duties beginning with tonight’s match with the Houston Dash.

“We are appreciative of Farid’s many contributions to the club over the past 18 months and wish him the best in all his future endeavors,” said OL Reign CEO Bill Predmore. “We have great respect for Farid’s talents and all he brought to the organization, but in our recent conversations there was a collective agreement that new leadership was required to achieve the performances and results needed to satisfy our ambitions.”

Benstiti’s departure comes as the Reign have had a disappointing start to the 2021 season. The Reign, who have signed several star players for the 2021 seasons, including lending a trio of Olympique Lyonnais legends, sit ninth in the league table after seven games with only two wins. The poor start represents a vast underachievement of expectations for a roster that boasts Megan Rapinoe, Rose Lavelle, Eugénie Le Sommer and Dzsenifer Maroszán, among others. Last Saturday, NJ/NY Gotham FC shut the Reign out by a score of 3-0.

Benstiti has been in charge of the Tacoma club since January 2020, managing the side to an overall record of six wins, nine losses and five draws under his charge.
